UF shoots down report of potential Texas, Florida home-and-home series

The College Football Playoff era, along with the SEC’s mandate of having to play one Big Five conference opponent annually starting in 2016, is helping premier non-conference matchups happen. Citing sources, SST Radio reported that Florida and Texas are discussing a potential home-and-home series.

Two familiar faces exist that could potentially help make this happen: Will Muschamp and Charlie Strong. Muschamp was Texas’ head coach in waiting and defensive coordinator prior to coming to Florida, while Strong had four different stints at Florida and was an assistant coach in Gainesville for 18 seasons. However, Florida football’s Twitter handle shot down the report.

I could see Texas signing on for such a series, but would Florida actually agree to this home-and-home series? The Gators already play a brutal in-conference schedule and play national champion FSU annually, satisfying the mandate of one Big Five conference opponent.

A Texas-Florida matchup would be incredible for college football.
