After 3 seasons in the NFL, Tosh Lupoi could soon be heading back to the college ranks.
According to Brandon Marcello of 247Sports.com, Lupoi is “potentially a name to watch” for a spot on Dan Lanning’s new staff at Oregon. Lanning became the Ducks’ head coach on Saturday after spending the past 4 seasons at Georgia, including the past 3 as defensive coordinator.
Lupoi was a member of Alabama’s defensive staff from 2014-18, which included spending his final 2 seasons as co-defensive coordinator. He then left for the NFL, becoming the Cleveland Browns’ defensive line coach in 2019.
In 2020, Lupoi was the defensive line coach and run game coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons. This season, he’s serving as the defensive line coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars under Urban Meyer.
Lupoi has ties to the Pac-12, though, as that’s where he began his coaching career. He was the defensive line coach at California from 2008-11, then served as Washington’s defensive line coach from 2012-13. He also played at Cal as a defensive lineman from 2000-05.
However, if Lupoi decides to head to Oregon, it will be his first Pac-12 job since his stint at Washington ended with him separating from the Huskies amid allegations of recruiting violations. Although he never received any penalties, he wasn’t retained on staff when Chris Petersen became head coach.
Lanning was a graduate assistant at Alabama in 2015, so he’s crossed paths with Lupoi in the past.
