Former Alabama QB Blake Sims is looking for a new job.
Sims was cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday evening. He was competing for a roster spot as a RB during training camp. He made the transition to RB because NFL teams did not view him as a legitimate QB candidate.
Sims certainly demonstrated an ability to be effective running the ball at Alabama with 705 career rushing yards and a 4.7 YPC. Unfortunately, that has not translated to an NFL opportunity at this point.
Scott Smith reported the announcement on the team’s website.
On Monday, the Buccaneers tweaked the depth chart by signing defensive ends Mehdi Abdesmad and Hendrick Ekpe. To make room, the team placed defensive end Justin Trattou on injured reserve and waived running back Blake Sims.
Sims did play in the first two preseason games, but he had only one rushing attempt for three yards. The former Tide QB still has a chance to find a spot on a roster or practice squad to contribute this season.
Sims was a large part of Alabama’s success in 2014. He was selected to the second team All SEC after leading the Crimson Tide to the College Football Playoff before losing to Ohio State.
