A former Florida DB is staying close to home after being drafted by the Orlando Guardians in the XFL league.

The 2020 reboot of the XFL is officially back up and running after being paused because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The XFL season begins 6 days after the conclusion of the NFL season, and consists of 8 professional teams across the league. The XFL draft, much like the NFL Draft, is the process to fill the rosters of the league’s 8 teams, and kicked off on Wednesday.

Matt Elam was selected in the 22nd Round Wednesday.

Elam played for the Gators under Will Muschamp from 2010-12, starting in his freshman year. In his Gator career, Elam racked up 176 total tackles, including 5 sacks and 6 INTs as a safety. During his final season, Elam was a first-team All-American and was a semifinalist for both the Thorpe Award and the Bednarik Award.

The Guardians will take on the Arlington Renegades in the first game of the season in January.
