Vernon Hargreaves has found a new NFL home only a day after getting cut by the Houston Texans.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Hargreaves was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday, meaning the 26-year-old cornerback is going from one of the worst teams in the AFC to one of the best. The Bengals are currently 5-3 and looking to make a push into the playoffs.
Hargreaves could provide a boost to Cincinnati’s defense, as he had 27 tackles, 1 interception and 3 pass deflections in 8 games (5 starts) for Houston this season. A 6-year NFL veteran, Hargreaves is a former first-round draft pick, having been taken by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016.
After playing at Florida, Hargreaves spent 3 1/2 seasons with the Bucs, who waived him during the 2019 season. At that point, he was claimed by the Texans, who he played 30 games for over the past 3 seasons.
The Bengals are hosting the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, but it’s unknown if Hargreaves will be active for that game. If not, then Cincinnati has a bye in Week 10 and won’t be back in action until a Nov. 21 road matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.
