Jaden Rashada will not be playing football at the FBS level next season.

Instead, the former Georgia quarterback and one-time Arizona State starter will be dropping down to the FCS level. On Friday, Rashada announced his commitment to Sacramento State on his Instagram page. The Hornets, coached by Brennan Marion, compete in the Big Sky conference and are coming off a 3-9 season last fall.

At Sacramento State, Rashada will enter into a competition with incumbent starting quarterback Carson Conklin. The 6-foot-1 redshirt sophomore was a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award last season as the top FCS freshman. He set single-season program records for passing yards (2,876) and passing touchdowns (28) by a freshman.

Rashada’s whirlwind start to his career serves as a cautionary tale for the pitfalls of the transfer portal.

He was a 4-star, top-100 recruit out of Pittsburg, California, in the 2023 class. After signing with Florida, Rashada left the Gators after a reported NIL deal fell apart. He landed at Arizona State, where he’d eventually start for Kenny Dillingham as a freshman.

Rashada is currently suing Gators coach Billy Napier, a former Florida staffer, and a booster while alleging he was induced to sign with the program under “false and fraudulent promises.” The lawsuit is still pending.

At Arizona State, Rashada started the first 2 games of the 2023 season before an injury knocked him out of the lineup for 9 games. He returned in the regular-season finale and ended the year with 485 yards and 4 scores through the air.

After the season, Rashada sought another transfer and landed at Georgia.

While Arizona State found its next starter in the transfer portal, sprinted to a Big 12 championship, and grabbed a bye in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff, Rashada settled back into a reserve role. He did not appear in a game during his lone season with the Bulldogs and jumped back into the transfer portal on Jan. 5.

North Carolina briefly pursued Rashada this offseason, but a scheduled visit to Chapel Hill earlier this month was called off, and the Tar Heels turned their interest elsewhere. Rashada also reportedly had interest from Western Kentucky, UConn, and Tulane.
