Former Kentucky running back Chris Rodriguez will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2023 season after being placed on the injured reserve.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news on Thursday. The Washington Commanders RB injured his ankle during the 30-28 loss to the New York Jets. Rodriguez played in 13 games for Washington this season with 247 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns.

Rodriguez was taken in the 6th round of this year’s draft out of Kentucky. He competed for snaps in a Washington backfield that included Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson. However, Rodriguez took over the backfield with Robinson unable to play in Weeks 15 and 16.

The Commanders come into Sunday’s matchup with the San Francisco 49ers at 4-11. With the playoffs out of reach, Washington can try to play the spoiler role. San Francisco is competing with the Philadelphia Eagles for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

Kickoff between Washington and San Francisco will be at 1 p.m. ET on FOX.
