A former Mississippi State offensive lineman has found a new home.

Reed Buys, a redshirt junior, announced that he would be transferring to South Alabama for the 2023 season. Buys will have 2 years of eligibility remaining.

A 6-foot-4, 300-pound lineman, Buys elected to transfer to Mississippi State from Jones (Miss.) Junior College. He redshirted his first year at the school in 2020 and played seldom over the next 2 seasons in Starkville.

A native of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Buys attended Warren Central High School. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the NCAA all granted players 1 extra year of eligibility.  Buys will have the opportunity to play a 5th and 6th year in college if he chooses.

South Alabama turned the corner under 2nd-year coach Kane Wommack in 2022, going 10-2 and finishing tied for 1st place in the Sun Belt West division. Because the Jaguars lost their head-to-head matchup against Troy, the Trojans represented the division in the Sun Belt Championship game against Coastal Carolina.

Since arriving in Mobile, Wommack has posted a 15-9 record.
