Former Mississippi State defender Chris Jones will not begin the 2023 season on the Kansas City Chiefs active roster.

After weeks of speculation, the Chiefs announced Tuesday that 4-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle will be on the Reserve/Did Not Report list to begin the 2023 season. Jones has stated that he is willing to hold out until Week 8 amidst an ongoing negotiation regarding a new contract for the eighth-year player.

Jones will take financial hits from this holdout, and he has already accrued nearly $2 million in fines. The Chiefs franchise has made it clear that it is in their interest to reach an agreement with Jones, but talks have apparently stalled in recent weeks.

If Jones does not play this season, Kansas City will have to find a way to replace his 44 tackles and 15.5 sacks from a season ago. He spearheads a relatively young defensive line for the Chiefs, making it all the more important that Jones returns to lead the group for KC.

Kansas City will open its 2023 campaign against the Detroit Lions on Thursday, Sept. 7 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.
