Former Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral was released by the Carolina Panthers Wednesday afternoon after 2 years in Charlotte.

Corral’s story is an unfortunate one. The former Rebel entered the NFL last season but suffered a lisfranc injury in a preseason game against New England and was never really given another chance with the Panthers. Of course, this past draft the Panthers traded with the Chicago Bears for the right to the No. 1 overall pick, former Alabama QB Bryce Young.

And with Young showing he’s plenty capable in preseason this year, the Panthers elected to keep him and backup Andy Dalton while releasing Corral.

Corral showed a lot at Ole Miss before being selected in the 3rd round last year. His senior season was especially incredible, seeing him throw for 3,349 yards with 20 touchdowns and 5 interceptions while also scampering for 614 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground. Corral drove opposing linebackers crazy in college.

His injury has hampered that speed thus far in the NFL, where everyone has all-star speed as opposed to just a few. Let’s see if he can crack a practice squad anywhere.
