Former Oregon football standout Keanon Lowe tackled a suspected gunman at Parkrose High School (Portland, Oregon) Friday, per a report from OregonLive.com.

Portland police responded to a call about a man with a gun at the high school before noon on Friday. A distraught student was wearing a black trench coat and carrying a shotgun, but Lowe acted quickly and tackled the suspect at the school’s tennis courts before anyone was hurt. The suspect is a student at the school, per students, and according to police, he had intended to harm himself.

Additional details were provided by OregonLive.com:

Police said no one was hurt in the incident and that there are no additional suspects. They hadn’t determined by approximately 2 p.m. whether any shots were actually fired.

An online city dispatch tracker refers to the incident as a suicide attempt or threat with weapon. A parent said students reported that the suspect, a fellow student, had brought a gun to the school with the intention of committing suicide. A source said the suspect had a shotgun.

Back to the hero — Lowe is the football coach and track coach, and he also works as a security guard at the school.

“I’m just happy everyone was OK,” Lowe said after the event. “I’m happy I was able to be there for the kids and for the community.”

Lowe played for Oregon from 2010-14. He caught 68 passes for 891 yards and 11 TDs during his career.
