Former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett was released by the Houston Texans on Tuesday.
Mallett likely sealed his fate with a couple of mistakes last weekend. He was late for meetings on Saturday, blaming traffic for his lateness. Then he missed the Texans’ charter flight to Miami, where they were playing the Dolphins on Sunday. He had to take a commercial flight instead, and did not play Sunday.
Earlier this season, Mallett missed two days of training camp after losing the starting quarterback competition to Brian Hoyer. In a scene shown on HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” Mallett told Rick Smith, the Texans’ general manager, that he had overslept.
Mallett had split time at quarterback with Hoyer this season. He started four games, but was benched after the Texans lost three of those contests. He has thrown for 770 yards and three touchdowns this year.
Mallett started two years at Arkansas. He passed for 7,493 yards and 62 touchdowns in his two seasons with the Razorbacks. The New England Patriots drafted Mallett in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
