Former Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman understands he hasn’t lived up to the hype he had coming out of high school. However, some of that is related to injuries, and Weigman is confident he can live up to his true potential during the 2025 season.
Coming out of high school, Weigman was a 5-star prospect and the No. 2 QB prospect in the country per the 247 Sports Composite. He would appear in 5 games for the Aggies as a true freshman in 2022 and was in line for his first season as the starter in 2023.
Weigman opened that season with an impressive performance, but it lasted only until his 4th game of the season when a foot injury took him out for the rest of the year. He was able to rehab and grab the starting job for the 2024 season, but he was injured yet again in the season opener vs. Duke.
However, that previous foot injury impacted how Weigman reacted to his 2024 shoulder injury, according to comments made to Chris Hummer with 247 Sports/CBS Sports. According to that story, the new coaching staff under head coach Mike Elko wanted Weigman to rest his injury before SEC play, but the star QB didn’t want to miss time.
Instead, Weigman says he took a Toradol shot to numb the pain in his shoulder to stay on the field. Unfortunately, compensating for his shoulder led to a biceps strain and forced him to miss more time, eventually losing the starting job to Marcel Reed.
So, where does that leave Weigman for 2025? He claims he is just now returning to the form he knows he can play with at Houston:
“I’m just getting back to the way I know I can play,” Weigman said. “That top quarterback in the class. I’m going to prove it this year.”
Weigman will especially be looked upon to turn things around under 2nd-year head coach Willie Fritz. Fritz took the Houston job ahead of the 2024 season after an impressive run at Tulane, but the Cougars were just 4-8 in his first season at the helm. But if Weigman is truly healthy, a turnaround could be in store.
Across his entire time at Texas A&M, Weigman completed 60% of his passes and threw for almost 2,700 yards with 19 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. He once threw for 5 touchdowns in a game vs. New Mexico and nearly completed 82% of his passes in a 2024 upset of Mizzou.
Now, we’ll see how Weigman fares in Houston.
