Former Texas linebacker Derion Gullette didn’t have to stay in the transfer portal long before finding a new home. He entered the portal on Dec. 9 and on Wednesday decided to commit to Mississippi State.
Gullette played sparingly for the Longhorns in 2024. The LB recorded 2 tackles on the season, getting 1 in the opener against Colorado State and 1 against UTSA. Upon choosing to transfer to Starkville, Gullette said it was the “right fit.”
“Mississippi State is just the right fit for me,” Gullette told 247Sports. “It checked all of my boxes, coaching staff wise, depth chart wise and school wise. The program and the education literally checked every box that I had. They are talking about me playing a true Dime linebacker spot and I think that’s a good spot for me.”
Before heading to Texas, Gullette starred for Teague High School in Teague, TX. He racked up 125 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, and 3 sacks in his final season of high school. The 247Sports Composite ranking had Gullette as a 4-star prospect and the No. 22 player out of Texas in the 2023 class. Gullette chose Texas over offers from Ohio State, Oklahoma, Alabama, and others.
Now, he will look to secure a spot on a Bulldogs’ defense that desperately needs to be revamped. So far, the Bulldogs have seen 24 players enter the portal while bringing in 9 from elsewhere, including Gullette. Five of the 9 commits the Bulldogs have landed thus far are on the defensive side of the ball.
