It’s rare that LSU lets a top in-state prospect slip through its fingers. Alabama managed to swipe one away from its rival when the four-star wide receiver Daylon Charlot announced his intention to sign with the Crimson Tide on National Signing Day.

Charlot, a consensus four-star receiver, is the No. 9 player at the position in the country, per 247sports’ industry composite. He’s also the No. 4 player from Louisiana in this class.

The 6-foot, 193-pound receiver from Patterson, La. put on a show in the Under Armour All-American game, with a punt return for a touchdown and two other big returns that impressed scouts and fans alike. Scouts say he has good body control and hands as a receiver and is a stellar athlete with excellent speed despite not being a massive player.

Charlot was one of LSU’s biggest remaining targets, and the Tigers had been hot on his heels since he took an official visit to Baton Rouge in December. LSU still has a stranglehold on Louisiana prospects, with commitments or LOIs from six of the top 10 players in the state.

Instead of heading to Baton Rouge, Charlot joins five-star wide receiver Calvin Ridley, who signed his LOI earlier on Wednesday, as the second receiver in Alabama’s top-rated recruiting class. Alabama will be replacing its top three receivers from 2014, including Heisman finalist Amari Cooper. Charlot could make an immediate impact for Alabama on special teams, where the Tide struggled at times in 2014.
