FOX airs bizarre Jimmy Johnson AI tribute ahead of Super Bowl 59

FOX’s pregame show for Super Bowl 59 included a tribute to longtime analyst and former coach Jimmy Johnson.

The tribute included a heavy dose of artificial intelligence as it looked back at Johnson’s career. The video highlighted Johnson during his time with Oklahoma State, Miami, the Dallas Cowboys and other steps along his legendary coaching career.

But rather than use authentic footage from that time in Johnson’s career, the FOX team used AI to provide the video for the story. Here’s the full segment, which aired a couple of hours before kickoff of the Super Bowl:

There was plenty of strong reaction on social media to FOX’s use of AI in this manner. Most of it was negative, although some seemed to appreciate the unique approach FOX took with this tribute. Johnson was emotional on set after seeing it for the first time.

There was no official announcement made regarding Johnson’s future following the tribute. However, Johnson, 81, indicated he’s going to take things “one day at a time” with regards to his broadcasting future. Here’s Johnson’s reaction to the tribute:
