FOX analyst on naming Anthony Richardson starter for Week 1: ‘Worst decision Colts could make’
FOX analyst Emmanuel Acho believes the Indianapolis Colts should not start former Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson Week 1.
Acho believes the decision to start Richardson would be detrimental to both the Colts and to Richardson.
“I think this is the worst decision the Colts could make, not only for their organization, but also for Anthony Richardson,” he said on Speak. “For me, it’s very simple. If you have a player that is not yet ready to play, allow him to learn from the mistakes of others.”
Acho believes the Colts should go in a different direction and give Richardson a chance to learn while watching from the sideline rather than throwing him straight into a game. He then cites examples like Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert — all players who did not start right away.
He says one of the only examples of a player who had immediate success as a starter was Joe Burrow, but credits Burrow’s college journey to his success. Burrow transferred from Ohio State to LSU to lead what Acho called “the greatest team in college football history.”
Richardson was the 4th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft after a standout performance in the NFL combine. Richardson’s college numbers were far from the best, but the Colts saw something that led them to believe Richardson could be a franchise quarterback.
Richardson’s NFL journey will begin Sept. 10 as the Colts take on the Jacksonville Jaguars, when fans will find out whether or not the rookie quarterback will get the start.
