Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman names top candidates for LSU coaching job

Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman appeared on the Paul Finebaum Show Monday to discuss LSU’s coaching vacancy. Feldman said he expects the Tigers to focus on offensive candidates in the wake of firing former coach Les Miles on Sunday.

“I think, just given that they forced out a guy in Les Miles who had issues on offense, issues in clock management, I think it’s obvious that they’d probably look heavily at offensive guys,” Feldman said. “I think the first that are two obvious choices are Jimbo Fisher, who had been there under Nick Saban and is very well regarded from the people I’ve heard are decision makers there, as well as Tom Herman from Houston. They kind of walked down that road with him last time and he didn’t budge so I don’t know if it’s any different this year with Jimbo Fisher and LSU.

“Tom Herman is an interesting situation because I think he’s one of the rare coaches who you look at and think ‘I think he could be a good fit almost in any cultural setting in almost any part of the country. He’s a California, Southern California guy originally, but he spent most of his coaching career — outside of his time with Urban Meyer — in or around Texas.”

Herman gained steamed last offseason as one of the nation’s best rising coaches before signing an extension with Houston in November. But the Tigers could make him an offer to sway him to Baton Rogue if he continues to keep the Cougars ranked in the top 10.

Miles was fired four games into his 12th season with the program. He led the Tigers to a 114-34 (62-28 SEC) record during his tenure, which included a national championship in 2007, as well as two SEC Championships and BCS Championship Game appearances (2007, 2011).
