Garcia: Feel of the Gator locker room

No, I am definitely not literally inside the Gator locker room nor do I have any insider information from inside the locker room. This is just a look at what is likely going on in there based on the quotes and feel of the week.

It is clear that the Gators have found their quarterback for the foreseeable future. Treon Harris has been able to avoid the big turnover and energize the team. The feeling coming out of the locker room echoes that sentiment. His teammates love him. His coaches love him. Will Muschamp said this week, “He’s just a guy that makes plays and finds a way to win.” The receivers Florida came out in the Georgia game and dominated barely even being thrown to in the game. They dominated blocking. In the Vandy game, the receivers stepped up and made plays with the ball too. Latroy Pittman, Jr. said the completions Harris made in the Vandy game instilled confidence in the receiving core. “He’s a young quarterback and we have to make those kinds of plays and they need to be made,” Pittman, Jr. said. “I feel like it’s going to work out for the offense to keep it balanced in the run and pass game.” And that is exactly what Will Muschamp must do against South Carolina on Saturday, find the balanced attack. Protect his young quarterback with the threat of the run, but still open up that soft Carolina defense with the pass.

On the other side of the locker room, DJ Durkin, Florida’s defensive coordinator, is also worried about balance. He’s focused on the balanced attack of South Carolina. He should be as the Spurrier coached team comes off a bye week. They are sure to be prepared for the highly rated Florida Gator defense. Durking knows he must be prepared. “South Carolina is a big test for our secondary due to their ability to stretch the field, “ Durking said. He noted that Florida had to get pressure on South Carolina quarterback Dylan Thompson, much like they did against me most of my career against the Gators. Durkin knows, “it’s hard to make a balanced team like South Carolina one dimensional.”

The name of the game on both sides of the Gator locker room this week is balance. Let’s see if either side this week can knock the other off balance.
