One of the big stories for the LSU football team during fall camp has been the play of true freshman QB Garrett Nussmeier.
The 6-2, 172-pounder from Lake Charles, Louisiana, is second on the depth chart for the Tigers as their season opener against UCLA on Saturday, Sept. 4, approaches, and he’s likely to see action this fall.
This past Saturday, in LSU’s first scrimmage, Nussmeier wowed his coaches an teammates by completing 11-of-17 passes for 225 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Said LSU head coach Ed Orgeron after the performance, “The guy’s a gunslinger. It seems like he can throw the ball down the field from his hip or any position.”
Orgeron went on to praise the freshman’s work ethic and maturity, adding, “He’s settled down a little bit. He’s not being careless with the football. Obviously, he knows now that he’s right there in the position. No telling, he could be playing at any time.”
On Monday, the praise continued for Nussmeier, when LSU starting center Liam Shanahan was asked about the Tigers’ young quarterback.
Said Shanahan: “He carries a little bit of swagger. I’m not too surprised seeing him go out there and make plays. To see his progression, from spring to now, it’s been awesome.”

Nussmeier starred at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas, where he passed for 2,815 yards and 33 touchdowns as a senior. For his career, Nussmeier, who was rated by 247Sports as a 4-star recruit and the No. 84 overall prospect in the 2021 class, threw for more than 8,100 yards, 83 touchdowns, and only 20 interceptions.
And if the name sounds familiar, it probably should. Nussmeier’s father, Doug, was a 4th round pick by the New Orleans Saints in 1994 and went on to play 5 seasons with the franchise.
