Gary Danielson praises Detroit Lions’ season, recalls Alvin Kamara comparison for Jahmyr Gibbs

Gary Danielson is not surprised to see Jahmyr Gibbs have a big rookie season with the Detroit Lions. In fact, the long-time CBS Sports broadcaster — and former Lions’ QB — recalled a comparison he made with another former SEC running back.
“When we watched him play, even at Georgia Tech, we knew he had great potential,” Danielson said of Gibbs during an appearance on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” on Thursday. “When he came to Alabama, we saw right away that he was an Alvin Kamara-type back. I think that was my very first comparison when I watched him play was that he could be an Alvin Kamara player in the NFL. The Lions went against the grain taking him early when running backs were thought to be not as valuable. But I think one-two punch, you showed the highlights of Billy Sims, we had a great one, and obviously the 49ers do in Christian (McCaffrey). The Lions one-two punch, going to at least call it even in this game.”
Gibbs has appeared in 15 games and rushed for 945 yards with 10 touchdowns. He’s also caught 52 passes for 316 yards and a touchdown. He was drafted No. 12 overall in last year’s NFL Draft, one of the early surprises of the event.
Danielson, who played in Detroit from 1976 to 1984, said all of the former players wish they had this kind of season when they were with the Lions.
