The Washington Redskins took an SEC product in Preston Smith with their second-round pick, and after trading back in the third round to accumulate more picks, they took Florida tailback Matt Jones with the 95th overall pick, 31st pick of the third round.
The Redskins have a starting tailback in place in Alfred Morris, but wanted to add depth after selecting offensive lineman Brandon Scherff in the first round on Thursday.
Jones is a sturdy runner who 817 yards at 4.9 yards per carry last year. He’s the third SEC tailback selected in the draft, following Todd Gurley (No. 10) and T.J. Yeldon (No. 36). He’s also the SEC’s sixth pick of the third round.
