Georgia had a home matchup with No. 17 Oklahoma on Saturday. The Bulldogs badly needed a win in this matchup as No. 1 Tennessee and No. 2 Auburn are next on the schedule.
Luckily for the Bulldogs, that’s exactly what happened. Georgia walked out of Stegeman Coliseum with a 10-point, 72-62 victory on Saturday.
At halftime, the Sooners had a 39-36 lead. However, the Bulldogs dominated in the 2nd half, outscoring the Sooners 39-26.
For the Bulldogs, Asa Newell led all starters with 15 points. The freshman forward also added 5 rebounds and 2 blocks on the day. Meanwhile, Dakota Leffew came up huge off the bench, also scoring 15 points and chipping in 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Silas Demary Jr. led the team in rebounds, grabbing 8 boards and also adding 10 points.
In total, the Bulldogs shot 42.9% from the field and just 17.6% from deep. Meanwhile, the Sooners shot 38.1% from the field and 25.9% from 3. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Sooners 41-33 and dominated from the foul line.
The Bulldogs attempted a whopping 37 free throws and made 27 of them. The Sooners, meanwhile, attempted just 8 free throws and made 7. The teams were close in almost every category except fouls and free throws, as the Bulldogs were able to draw 28 fouls on the day.
As mentioned above, this was a huge win for the Bulldogs. The team lost their SEC opener to Ole Miss, so adding a 2nd conference loss right before playing the No. 1 and No. 2 teams would not have been ideal.
