Georgia snaps historic Clemson streaks with dominating defensive performance
Saturday night’s showdown in Charlotte between No. 5 Georgia and No. 3 Clemson was highlighted by a masterful performance from the Bulldogs’ defense as they led the way in a 10-3 victory for head coach Kirby Smart and company.
The win also snapped several historic streaks that Clemson had going under its head coach Dabo Swinney. According to game notes provided by Clemson before the game, the Tigers had won 89 straight games when holding teams to under 23 points (dates back to 2010).
Clemson was also in the midst of a 24-game winning streak in the month of September.
#Georgia knocks off No. 3 #Clemson.
Clemson had won 89 straight games when holding teams to under 23 points. The Tigers have now lost two straight games for the first time since 2011 (127 games between consecutive losses). #GeorgiaVsClemson— Travis Jaudon (@JaudonSports) September 5, 2021
But the most impressive Clemson streak that was dismantled by the Bulldogs was the Tigers’ run of games without losing 2 straight. After a Sugar Bowl loss ended its 2020 season, Clemson was trying to extend that streak versus Georgia.
Clemson had played 127 straight games since losing back-to-back contests, the longest active streak in the country and the longest ever in ACC history, per ESPN. The Tigers had not lost back-to-back games since 2011.
Georgia held Clemson to 2 rushing yards on 23 carries (0.1 yards/carry).
