Georgia is in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl, a College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup against Notre Dame. The game is scheduled to kick off on Wednesday night as part of 3 CFP games on the New Year’s Day slate.
However, football has taken a back seat after a suspected terror attack killed 10 people and injured many others during the New Year’s festivities on Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning.
The attack, in which a suspect plowed a truck into a crowd of people before he was reportedly killed by police in a firefight, has cast a pall over a normally festive day in the city.
The Georgia travel party is all accounted for, but according to university president Jere W. Morehead, a Georgia student was “critically injured” in the attack:
“At this point, we have learned that a University of Georgia student was critically injured in the attack and is receiving medical treatment. I have spoken to the student’s family and shared my concern, support and well wishes on behalf of the entire UGA community,” a portion of Morehead’s statement reads. “I would like to express my gratitude to all the first responders who moved so quickly to help those affected by this senseless act of violence, as well as to the medical personnel who are caring for the injured.”
The Sugar Bowl is scheduled to kick off at 8:45 p.m. ET. No decision has been officially made as of yet about whether or not the game will go on as scheduled.
