Paul Johnson blames execution for failed two-point conversion: ‘It should have been a walk-in’

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson certainly had a lot to be upset about Monday night.

The Yellow Jackets triple-option attack worked time and again against No. 25 Tennessee. Georgia Tech gained 655 yards of total offense, including 535 yards rushing, and controlled the ball for 41:18 of game time.

Despite the offensive output, the mistakes and missed opportunities are what stuck with Coach Johnson. In fact, Johnson even believes he made the correct call on the two-point conversion, but the players did not execute properly.

“We screwed it up,” said Johnson. “That should have been a walk in…We screwed that up, so we didn’t deserve to win.”

It is hard to fathom how Johnson believes his players did not deserve to win after such a strong offensive showing. Johnson himself struggled to comprehend how his team lost after such a dominating offensive performance.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been in a game where you run 96 plays and have 655 yards and lose,” Johnson said.

Georgia Tech fans will be left to wonder how the defense broke down despite being on the field for just 18:17 of game time in regulation.
