Tennessee may have just been handed a big break as Georgia Tech has dismissed running back Dedrick Mills from the program. The school announced the news Friday afternoon.

According to a statement issued by the school, the decision to dismiss Mills comes after a violation of athletic department rules.

Mills had an outstanding freshman season last year and was poised to lead the Yellow Jackets in rushing for the second consecutive season in 2017 following the graduation of Marcus Marshall.

Last season, Mills rushed for 771 yards and 12 touchdowns. The only returning running back in the ACC with more yards last season is Miami running back Mark Walton. Mills was named as a 2nd Team All-ACC performer by Phil Steele heading into the season. Mills’ lofty numbers came despite the fact he missed four games last season.

With the graduation of Marshall and quarterback Justin Thomas, Georgia Tech must now replace its three leading rushers from last season.

Tennessee and Georgia Tech open the season in Atlanta’s new Mercedes Benz Stadium Monday, Sept. 4 at 8 pm ET on ESPN.
