Georgia Tech lands transfer commitment from former B1G CB, 4-star recruit

Georgia Tech has landed a transfer pledge from a former Big Ten cornerback who was one of the top recruits at his position in the 2024 recruiting cycle.

Jon Mitchell, who spent the 2024 season with Penn State, has committed to the Yellow Jackets. He will have 4 years of eligibility remaining.

Mitchell was a 4-star recruit per 247Sports’ composite rankings and the No. 16 cornerback in the country when he signed with the Nittany Lions. The Jacksonville, Fla. product saw time in 6 games, including both of the Nittany Lions’ College Football Playoff games.

He now will join Georgia Tech, who has seen steady improvement under Brent Key. The Yellow Jackets have finished 7-6 in back-to-back seasons with a pair of bowl apperances. Their 2023 Gasparilla Bowl showing their first postseason bid since 2018, Paul Johnson’s final season.

They pulled off a pair of top 10 upsets, first in the season opener against Florida State in Dublin and later at home against No. 4 Miami. They then played No. 7 Georgia in a dramatic 8-overtime affair before ultimately losing 44-42.

The Yellow Jackets have lost their last 2 games to the Bulldogs by 8 points or fewer, a massive step in the right direction after a 23-point loss in 2022, when Key went 4-4 as interim head coach.
