First-year Arkansas coach Chad Morris has some work to do in Fayetteville.

The Razorbacks finished last in the SEC West in 2017 with a 1-7 conference record and the quarterback position remains a question mark.

On Thursday, SEC Network analyst Greg McElroy chimed in with his opinion of what a quarterback needs to be successful in coach Morris’ offense with Bo Mattingly.

“Athleticism … (he) doesn’t have to be outrageously athletic, but can get you out of trouble if an offensive lineman whiffs on a block,” said McElory. “Or he can be a really, really smart cerebral guy that knows where to go with the ball before the snap is actually taken. You can have both and you can win with both, but not often are you going to see a guy 6-foot-7 and not overwhelmingly athletic and has been slow to process in the times that he’s played so far. So, it will be interesting to see how the offense changes and if Chad Morris adjusts a little bit based on the personnel he has at quarterback, but I’m not sure that Cole Kelley is the guy to take them to the next level. They may still have to still find that guy in recruiting over the next couple of years.”

The redshirt sophomore Kelley is the favorite to win the quarterback battle this year, as he is the only player on roster who threw a pass last season; however, Ty Storey has also made some noise this fall.

Kelley played in nine games in 2017 and threw for 1,038 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions.
