Greg McElroy calls Notre Dame a ‘very real’ national championship contender

Greg McElroy is one of many who sees a Notre Dame Fighting Irish team that has bounced back having a very legitimate chance of making the College Football Playoff and going far.
Perhaps as far as the national championship stage. They proved just how dominant they could be against quality opponents by taking down Army with a 49-14 blowout in Week 13.
“We told you that Army was no match for Notre Dame,” McElroy said. “Right now, Notre Dame has been on an absolute tear, and you can look at the Virginia game and maybe nitpick, and that’s fine. But if you really watch Notre Dame collectively and the comfort they’re starting to create with their quarterback, a defense that can completely sell out and take away the run. I think when you look at where Notre Dame is at, I think they are a very real national championship contender.”

But the path may not be perfect. Such has been the trend of the entire 2024 college football season, as McElroy acknowledged. A road bump could always be coming as soon as the next game.
“I will say that with a caveat. I think they could also lose next week,” McElroy said.
“Would it surprise anybody if USC beat Notre Dame with their weapons next week? It wouldn’t surprise me at all. I’m not trying to say that to be negative, it’s just that is seemingly the way college football season has gone this year. This is a huge game next week for Notre Dame. They win, they not only secure a Playoff spot, but I think you can make the case now that they secured that home Playoff game.”
It will be interesting to see just how things unfold as USC and Notre Dame face each other at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday in the Trojans’ house.
