As Texas emerges as a top-10 team again and soon to join the SEC, Texas A&M is scrambling to catch up to its old rival.
Texas A&M fired coach Jimbo Fisher on Sunday and began a search for a new head coach amid a 6-4 record. The Longhorns, meanwhile, rank No. 7 in the country with a 9-1 mark and outside College Football Playoff hopes.
“The fact that Texas is good is going to accelerate this decision-making process,” college football analyst Greg McElroy said on the McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning podcast on Monday. “They care very much about what’s going on in Austin, very, very much.”
“But Texas’ success has accelerated the concerns that they now have at their own place,” McElroy added. “So I think that’s a factor as well, knowing that Texas is on the verge of a Playoff berth, and the Aggies are stuck in neutral.”
Fellow college football analyst Cole Cubelic emphasized “that will become their biggest game every year” about the renewed Texas A&M-Texas rivalry in the SEC. Texas will move from the Big 12 Conference to the SEC in 2025.
“It definitely puts in to play ‘you’ve gotta make a move now’ to stay relevant in the national seen but the locally,” Cubelic said.
