Greg McElroy–a former Alabama quarterback–provided his knee-jerk thoughts on the unveiling of the recent College Football Playoff rankings, and specifically his takeaway from Alabama remaining at No. 8 despite a win over now-No. 19 LSU.

“Alabama, them holding serve, getting one of their best wins of the season against LSU, they don’t move. They were 8 last week, they’re 8 again this week,” McElroy said during ESPN’s rankings reveal. “It basically indicates at the moment that they don’t control their own destiny, which I think is unsettling for a lot of Alabama fans.”

McElroy went on to cite that the reason for such concern is the potential for teams in front of the Crimson Tide to win out and thus seal Bama out of the playoff based on placement.

“I think they’re really close, but you can also look at an undefeated Big Ten, you’ve got Texas in front of you. That’s the elephant in the room,” McElroy said.

The Crimson Tide will close the season with games against Kentucky (road), Chattanooga (home) and Auburn (road). If it is able to win the Kentucky or Auburn game, then Alabama will have clinched a spot in the SEC title game, where Nick Saban and Co. would likely take on Georgia in a rematch of the 2021 SEC Championship Game.
