Greg McElroy recently shared his thoughts on No. 2 Georgia hanging on to defeat visiting No. 12 Missouri 30-21 last weekend during an episode of the Always College Football show.
Georgia never held a double-digit lead in the victory and trailed 13-10 in the third quarter before pulling away. The ESPN analyst gives plenty of praise to upstart Missouri for posing a challenge to the back-to-back national champs.
“This was by far Georgia’s best win of the season. I have a ton of respect for Missouri…Missouri is real. The college football world might not know it yet but Missouri is very real,” McElroy said. “This was by far the most stressful game we’ve seen in Athens in years.”
McElroy explains that Georgia has set the bar higher in the midst of its quest for a historic 3-peat.
“Georgia is held to a different standard. We acknowledge that. By the way, they probably should be. They’re a 2-time national champion,” McElroy said. “We are going to compare this Georgia team to the Georgia teams we saw in ’22 and ’21. Is that fair? Probably not. Because last time I checked the ’22 Georgia team and the ’21 Georgia team are not in contention for the College Football Playoff. Georgia has to beat this collection of teams.”
McElroy would like to see Georgia clean up its run defense as the Bulldogs will take on the potent rushing attack of No. 10 Ole Miss this weekend. Missouri running back Cody Schrader rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown.
“There is a little bit of a concern that I acknowledged when watching Georgia defensively and offensively at the line of scrimmage…It was almost a foregone conclusion that you’re not running the ball on Georgia,” McElroy said. “…That wasn’t the case when Missouri came to town.”
McElroy also addressed Georgia’s offensive line, which allowed 3 sacks and 5 tackles for loss.
“There was a lot more pressure than he’s used to seeing,” McElroy said of quarterback Carson Beck. “That was the first time in a while I’ve seen a quarterback for Georgia feeling a lot of heat.”
Ole Miss at Georgia is set for 7 p.m. EST (ESPN).
