Greg McElroy sees Texas as an SEC team that is a “near lock” for the College Football Playoff heading into Week 10. When McElroy unveiled his current tiers, the Longhorns were the best-situated team from the conference heading into November.

“They are a healthy, healthy favorite against Florida and against Kentucky… they’re a comfortable favorite of about 5, 6 or 7, depending on how that levels out on the road at Texas A&M,” McElroy said. “Probably looking at a 10-2 record at worst.”

He noted Texas A&M and Georgia as the two teams most likely to hand the Longhorns a loss. And it’s worth noting that Texas did just narrowly defeat Vanderbilt, 27-24.

The Aggies have been on a roll since they lost the first game of the season to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. They have won every game since then, most recently taking down the LSU Tigers in dominant fashion.

“They’re currently even money,” McElroy said. “They’re a narrow favorite this week, 2.5 (point favorite) on the road against South Carolina. They’re about a 5-point favorite on the road at Auburn right now and they are currently a 7-point underdog against the Texas Longhorns in the season finale.”

McElroy says he believes the Aggies will lose at least one more game and sees them likely as a 10-2 football team. But, if they’re 10-2, they’re might still get to the SEC Championship Game in the analyst’s eyes.

“If they make that, can you envision a scenario where Texas A&M would be left out of the playoff? Make the championship game, lose the championship game potentially and get left out at 10-3? I don’t know. Possibly.”

There’s no question this will be an interesting discussion to watch play out as the season continues for the Aggies, who face South Carolina on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
