Greg McElroy has been previewing many teams all across college football as they are going through the spring portion of their season. With the NIL and transfer portal playing such a big role, spring practices have changed in many ways.

During a segment on his podcast ‘Always College Football’, McElroy discussed what LSU needs to do in the spring window of the transfer portal, and he started at the safety position.

“For LSU, it is pretty obvious where their help is needed,” McElroy said. “It’s at defensive tackle and it’s safety. Those are the 2 spots for Brian Kelly that they really need to try and go after. LSU hosted a bunch of safeties in the winter portal window. They were able to sign one in Tamarcus Cooley from NC State. But, I think a perfect world, they probably would have added more.”

Depth has been an issue for the Tigers in the secondary the past couple of years, and McElroy said that could once again be an issue. Another position he thinks Kelly has to look at is defensive tackle.

“They have some quality players, they have some young guys that they’re expecting big jumps from,” McElroy said. “Like everybody, do you think Brian Kelly is going to turn down a quality defensive tackle body? Defensive tackle by the way, might be the most important position in the portal given how many teams are in desperate need of adding one.”

Here’s a clip from McElroy’s analysis:

Defense has been an issue for the Tigers during the Kelly era, and for the Tigers to take that next step, that side of the ball has to improve.
