Auburn could be without a key linebacker for a little while.

Austin Keys suffered a thumb injury in Auburn’s season opener against UMass that required surgery, and Tigers’ head coach Hugh Freeze said that he “could be out a while” during the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday afternoon.

Before the injury Saturday, keys had picked up 2 tackles.

Keys transferred to Auburn after spending 2 seasons at Ole Miss. He had a solid year for the Rebels a season ago, picking up 39 total tackles, 2 sacks and a forced fumble. Getting Keys back to 100% before the season is over would be huge for the Tigers.

Even with Keys for part of the game, Auburn managed to take care of business against UMass, defeating the Minutemen 59-14. This week, Auburn has a big early-season test as the Tigers go on the road to take on Cal.

A win over a non-conference opponent on the road would be huge for Auburn’s momentum as the Tigers look to get back on track under their new head coach.
