Hugh Freeze says Auburn WR room ‘rivals’ AJ Brown-led group from his Ole Miss days
Hugh Freeze is very excited about the potential of Auburn’s wide receiver room in 2025.
The Tigers added several blue-chip wide receivers in their 2024 recruiting class. After showing promise as true freshman, Auburn is now relying on receivers Cam Coleman, Malcolm Simmons and Perry Thompson to lead the offense.
“They better make plays,” Freeze said. “If that room doesn’t have success, we won’t have success.”
In addition to Coleman, Simmons and Thompson, Auburn also added a couple of transfers this offseason in Eric Singleton Jr. and Horatio Fields. On Tuesday, Freeze said the talent in this group “rivals” what he had at Ole Miss when players like AJ Brown, DJ Metcalf, Van Jefferson and Evan Engram once shared the same offense.
“It’s one of the more talented rooms I’ve ever been associated with,” Hugh Freeze added. “Somebody asked me the other day how I would rank that room versus DK Metcalf, AJ Brown, Van Jefferson, Evan Engram … I think it’s a bit early for me to put all of that [pressure] on them, but it rivals it. It’s close.
“Even like Malcolm and Perry, even just a 2nd year in the same system with the same terminology and doing the same things, you see them now catching on.”
Here’s a clip from Freeze’s comments on the Auburn wide receiver room:
