Hugh Freeze says Cal’s offense is ‘extremely scary,’ explains travel plans

After a dominating Week 1 win over UMass, Auburn now turns the page to a tough matchup on the road against Cal.

The Golden Bears also handled business in their first game of the season against North Texas, and they will be looking for a win over a big SEC opponent at home.

Cal showed off its explosive offense in Week 1, picking up 669 total offensive yards in the 58-21 routing. Running back Jaydn Ott had 188 of those yards by himself on the ground. Containing that offense will be one of the challenges for Auburn.

“Offensively they’re extremely scary,” head coach Hugh Freeze said in his Monday press conference. “That tailback, he’s one of the best that I’ve seen and obviously they had 670 yards, I think it was, last week. They go fast, they got about 100 plays in the game. They had 8 receivers with 2 or more catches. Starting quarterback went out and the other kid came in and still threw for all these yards. They’ve got depth and I think the tailback is really special. And it will be a great challenge for us as we go on the road to Cal.”

But the on the field challenges are just part of it. Auburn will also have to deal with the challenges that come with traveling and playing a team across the country. The game will kickoff at 10:30 p.m. ET.

It’s not ideal for Freeze and his team, but he is making sure that he has a positive outlook on the early challenge.

“I told our team when I taught my lesson for the week this morning with them, that’s one of the challenges I have for me to embrace it, because I don’t like it,” Freeze said. “I don’t like scheduling teams on the west coast. I’d just assume play somebody over here on the east coast, but it was done. And so me complaining and not embracing it is not the proper response. The only one I’ve done was BYU. It was a challenge. This one is even further and in another timezone. I think it creates some challenges, but this will be a good test for all of us. All of that’s going to be a challenge, but that’s what life is.”
