Inside the Numbers: High-scoring offense, inconsistent defense the story in Athens

Georgia hosts Tennessee in a crucial SEC East showdown. Let’s look inside some of the numbers:
The Good
304: The number of rushing yards Georgia is averaging per game through its first three games. Todd Gurley, Sony Michel and Nick Chubb have proven to be one heck of a trio of backs that the Bulldogs have relied on. Each of the three backs are averaging at least 9.5 yards per carry and have scored at least one touchdown. Good luck stopping that, SEC teams.
318: As inconsistent as the Georgia defense has been, its only surrendering 318 yards per game of total offense, not a bad mark in this day and age of offensive football. Jeremy Pruitt’s unit has to continue to improve and if Georgia hopes to win the SEC East, that number needs to drop below 300 yards.
85: The percentage of possessions the Bulldog offense scores touchdowns on in the red zone. When they get inside the 20, Georgia has proven they can put seven on the board. Good teams put points on the board when they have the opportunities.
The Bad
44: The percentage of third downs Georgia is converting. They’ve had a really hard time keeping drives alive when they get into a third down situation, especially if its third-and-5 or more with Hutson Mason not having a lot of success throwing the ball down the field.
25: The number first downs by penalties for Georgia’s three opponents. Little mistakes keep coaches up at night and these are the types of undisciplined plays that can make or break a team’s season against a quality opponent.
11.3: Yards per catch the Georgia defense is allowing. The secondary has had a lot of trouble tackling early this season and have allowed some big plays to talented wideouts. They face another group this weekend in Tennessee.
