It’s Homecoming in Athens this weekend as Georgia hosts Vanderbilt. Let’s look inside some of the numbers:
The Good
621: Rushing yards Todd Gurley has amassed through the Bulldogs’ first four games. He’s coming off a career-high 208 yards against Tennessee and could surpass that against a very bad Vanderbilt defense.
45.2: The number of points Georgia is averaging per game, good for second in the conference behind Texas A&M. That has largely come from the rushing attack which is averaging right at 300 yards per game.
11: Georgia is tied for fifth in the SEC with 11 sacks. When active, Georgia’s front seven is as good as any in the country with Leonard Floyd and Jordan Jenkins rushing off the outside. True freshman Lorenzo Carter has also added some depth and athleticism to the Bulldog defensive front.
The Bad
37: The percentage of third downs the Bulldogs are converting on the year. Georgia has been awful converting third downs on the offensive side of the ball. A key on Saturday will be the ability of the Vanderbilt defense to get off the field on third down.
162.2: The struggles of the passing game have been well-documented. But numbers don’t lie. The Bulldogs are No. 13 in the SEC in passing offense, ahead of only this week’s opponent, and are dead last in passing yards. Georgia expects the return of Malcolm Mitchell, Justin Scott-Wesley and Jonathan Rumph this week, so we’ll see how that impacts Hutson Mason’s ability to throw the ball.
22.8: Against better competition, Georgia has given up 21, 38 and 32 points. Vanderbilt won’t come anywhere near that on Saturday with its inept offense, but with better opponents waiting in the wings, the Bulldogs will have to continue to outscore opponents.
