Jacksonville State gets ugly reminder as to what’s important prior to LSU game

Football may mean a lot to some people, and nearly everything to SEC fans. Saturdays down south are different than it is for other parts of the country.

But for Jacksonville State, the Gamecocks aren’t completely focused on LSU right now, despite facing the Tigers in just three days. According to jsugamecocksports.com, cornerback Keegan Hill is fighting a life-threatening bacterial infection.

“He had some pressure on his brain and they really don’t know what caused it,” Gamecocks head coach John Grass said. “He is battling for his life right now and the family has been with him the whole time and we have tried to send someone every day. When things like that happens, it brings everything in to perspective – we are playing a game.”

Regarding the game against LSU, Grass said he doesn’t look at LSU any differently after its loss to Wisconsin. He said either team could have won the game.

Jacksonville State may compete at the FCS level, but the Tigers shouldn’t scoff at the Gamecocks. A year ago, Jacksonville State made it to the FCS championship game where it lost to – now Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback – Carson Wentz’s North Dakota State Bison.

A couple Gamecocks running backs in Roc Thomas (formerly of Auburn) and Josh Clemons (formerly of Kentucky) know what LSU is all about.

“It is very exciting to play there, and from the moment you start to warm up, the fans are on you,” Clemons said. “People are out there when the bus pulls up and they will be into it the whole game, no matter the score. We won’t have a problem getting our energy level up.”

Our thoughts are with Hill and his family.
