The Gamecocks defeated UTEP 17-14 Saturday evening after a clutch interception sealed the deal.
UTEP decided to go for it on 4th and 1, but rather than running the ball up the middle to get in good position for a field goal, the Miners threw a risky pass and Jacksonville State made them pay.
The Gamecocks applied pressure on the quarterback and forced a bad pass, which was intercepted and put the Gamecocks in position to run the clock down. UTEP’s coaches are definitely kicking themselves now for making the dicey call.
UTEP needed 1 yard and coaches decided to get cute.

A win in Week 0 is always sweet, but it certainly feels sweeter for second-year head coach Rich Rodriguez and co. as the Gamecocks became an FBS team back in July.
The Gamecocks will look to keep their FBS momentum going as they take on ETSU next week.
