Jalen Hurts enters Alabama game with big ovation, loses redshirt possibility

On Saturday against Louisiana-Lafayette, Alabama QB Jalen Hurts entered his fifth game of the season, and forfeited his redshirt possibility for 2018.
The Alabama QB controversy has been one of the biggest storylines of the college football season. After Hurts led the Crimson Tide to 26 wins in 28 games, he lost his starting job to Tua Tagovailoa, who replaced Hurts in the championship game last year.
Tagovailoa clearly has proven that he’s the right answer under center for Alabama, but the talented Hurts ended up with the short end of the stick.
With the new redshirt rule, a player can play in up to four games and still redshirt for that season. Hurts decided that he wanted to play out the year for the Crimson Tide, and will only have one year of eligibility remaining after this season. Fans knew this, and when Hurts entered the game, he was greeted with a standing ovation for his commitment to the team.
Entering today’s game against the Ragin’ Cajuns, Hurts had completed 22-of-31 passes for 276 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.
We’ll see if Hurts decides to transfer after the conclusion of this season, but right now he seems at peace with a complementary role for this Alabama team.
