Jalen Milroe reflects on early-season benching, iconic play in Iron Bowl and ‘not giving up on your dream’
Jalen Milroe has faced plenty of adversity throughout his first season as Alabama’s starting quarterback.
CBS Sports released a video reflecting on Milroe’s season ahead of the SEC Championship game on Saturday.
“It just goes back to not giving up on your dream.”
After being benched earlier this season, Jalen Milroe persevered with grit and grind to lead the Crimson Tide back to the SEC Championship Game.

It began with a sloppy performance against Texas that earned him a spot on the bench in the USF game.
“There were some lessons to be learned coming out of the Texas game,” Nick Saban said. “How to take care of the ball, how important that was, how we needed him to distribute the ball in a more consistent fashion based on what we’re trying to do with the offense. Help him improve his ability to process and fundamentally distribute the ball the way it needs to be distributed so we can have success on offense.”
After that wake up call, Milroe slowly started to improve his decision making and playmaking ability. Ultimately, by the end of the season, he became one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the SEC.
“Jalen went from a mindset of a guy trying to make plays, to a mindset of a guy trying to get the ball to his teammates so they can make plays,” Saban said. “In doing that, it makes him a very dangerous player.”
Now Milroe is looking to lead his team to a win in the SEC Championship against Georgia. A win would get Alabama much closer to reaching the College Football Playoff.
For Milroe, the up and down season is just a part of his journey. Now he’s looking to submit himself among the Alabama greats.
“No one believed in me throughout this journey,” Milroe said. “I can count on my fingers who believed in me. But with all that, it took work. It took a true grind. It took harping on the little things to try to be the best person I can be.”
