Officers were called to the convenience store in response to a report that Sterling was selling CDs outside and pointed a gun at someone, according to The Advocate.
In a 48-second cell phone video, an officer can be seen tackling Sterling, and another officer assists in pinning him down.
After a brief struggle, an officer yells, “He’s got a gun! Gun!” Multiple shots can be heard in the ensuing seconds, prompting one of the video recorders to ask, “They shot him?” to which a crying woman responds, “Yes.”
The local NAACP chapter is calling for the arrest of the two officers involved in Sterling’s death:
“I’m calling on anybody in this city with a backbone to go arrest those two officers,” Mike McClanahan, of the local NAACP, said at a news conference Wednesday.
Congressman Cedric Richard has called on the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the incident.
