Jim Larranaga’s historic run as Miami’s head basketball coach is over, according to a report.
That’s per the Miami Herald’s Michelle Kaufman, who reports that an announcement is expected as early as Thursday.
Larranaga is arguably the most accomplished coach in Miami basketball history. He led the program to its first-ever Final Four appearance less than 2 years ago. He also brought the Canes to their first-ever Elite Eight back in 2022. He’s also responsible for 4 of Miami’s 5 Sweet 16 appearances ell-time.
Larranaga spent nearly 14 seasons as Miami’s head men’s basketball coach. His 274 total wins are the most of any coach in program history. He’s also 1 of just 2 Miami coaches all-time to coach for at least 100 games at the school and have a winning percentage above .600.
The reported decision to step down comes after a rough start to Miami’s 2024-25 campaign. The Canes are just 4-8 this season and most recently suffered a loss to Mount St. Mary’s. They’ve fallen out of the top-100 in KenPom’s rankings for the 2024-25 season.
Miami has not yet confirmed Larranaga’s decision. It’s also unclear who would step in as interim head coach for the rest of the campaign.
Miami’s next game is on New Year’s Day against Boston College.
