Florida has beaten the University of Kentucky an eye-popping 29-straight times. The last time the Wildcats were able to trip up the Gators on the football field, Ronald Reagan was president.
While this streak is certainly impressive, it’s no sure thing that Florida will extend it for yet another year.
UF head coach Jim McElwain echoed this sentiment on Wednesday during his weekly press conference:
“Both teams haven’t played each other, it’s 0-0. Last year was a true dog fight down [in Lexington]. [The streak] is obviously there but it doesn’t mean much because these two teams have not played against each other.”
Last year, Florida narrowly defeated Kentucky by a score of 14-9. The previous year, it took the Gators three overtimes to beat the Wildcats 36-30.
Kentucky possesses some explosiveness on offense in the form of running back Boom Williams, wide receiver Garrett Johnson and upstart signal-caller Drew Barker. Mark Stoops has done a terrific job of recruiting within the states of Ohio and Florida. This could ultimately be the most athletic and talented squad Stoops has had at his current stop.
Without question, Florida and McElwain don’t appear to be taking this SEC East foe lightly.
“They are ready to play,” said McElwain. “I’ve already watched film of the 2014 game that went three overtimes in Gainesville.”
