Watch list season continues as the 2019 college football season inches closer to becoming a reality.
The latest list to debut is the 2019 Jim Thorpe Award watch list, which was released on Monday. The award is given annually to the nation’s best defensive back and the criteria for players to be considered for the award are “performance on the field, athletic ability and character” according to the award’s website.
There are 46 defensive backs on the 2019 preseason watch list and includes five SEC defenders. It should be noted that the list does not mean players not listed cannot win the award — the Jim Thorpe Award is open to any and all defensive backs that excel on the field next season.
The winner of the award will be announced on Dec. 12, 2019, during the “Home Depot College Football Awards” show. The event is televised nationally by ESPN.
Here are the SEC players listed on the 2019 Jim Thorpe Award watch list:
- Cameron Dantzler, Mississippi State, Jr.
- Grant Delpit, LSU, Jr.
- CJ Henderson, Florida, Jr.
- Xavier McKinney, Alabama, Jr.
- JR Reed, Georgia, Sr.
