Jimbo Fisher announced earlier this week that Conner Weigman would be the Aggies starting quarterback to begin the year.

On Wednesday, he explained how Weigman’s competition with Max Johnson will benefit both parties this season. The two quarterbacks going at it instilled a competitive nature that will translate to games, but the two also formed a relationship that will work well moving forward.

Fisher broke down the nature of the quarterback competition during the SEC coach teleconference on Wednesday.

“I think you have 2 guys that know what they’re doing, they’re experienced in the offense, they know the offense. So they continually competed each and every day. Both are very smart, both are very competitive, both have great physical skills and they challenge each other and kept pushing each other to raise the bar in how they played and what they did. That’s what you want, competition from within. Nothing is given and everything has to be earned. They share and talk on the field and in games. They interact. I don’t know if they hang out 24 hours a day, but they’re friends and they’re friendly here, you see them communicating on the sidelines at practice and in meetings, they communicate very well.”

The Aggies begin the 2023 campaign Saturday as they take on New Mexico.
