Expectations are high in College Station for 2021 and beyond, as evidenced by Texas A&M being ranked 6th in the nation to start the year and the reported new contract extension expected to be awarded to head coach Jimbo Fisher.
If the Aggies are to realize that promise this season and contend for a berth in the College Football Playoff, one key area will be the offensive line, where 4 starters are being replaced from last season.
It does help, however, that the one returner up front is 6-4, 325-pound Kenyon Green, a preseason All-American who can play tackle or guard.
On Wednesday, Fisher was asked during the weekly SEC coaches teleconference about his revamped offensive line, and he singled out Green’s leadership and a newcomer as to why he feels that unit will fare just fine.
“I’m really excited with Kenyon’s leadership,” Fisher said. “Not only his ability to play, but his leadership. … Getting Jamir Johnson in here was really key. He’s got a lot of experience. … Having him up front will help us in a big-time way. … I’ve been very pleased with (the OL’s) toughness, their power and their athleticism.”
Johnson, who transferred to College Station from Tennessee, is a former 4-star recruit and top-100 player nationally according to 247Sports. The 6-5, 300-pounder started 17 games for the Volunteers.
